Merry Christmas Eve

maybe I'll post something tomorrow... after things settle down...

last night we had a secret santa. someone knocked on the door and connor got up to answer it. (I was a bit tangled up with yarn in my rocker) he closed the door with a puzzled look on his face and said that no one was there. sometimes people will knock outside of the ramshackle porch and the light out there wasn't turned on since we didn't expect anyone and it sometimes doesn't want to turn on anyway. so I went to check and there was a box full of presents for the little kids and a family gift and a gift card (I suspect) taped to the top of one. we decided to let the little kids open one and the rest have to wait until tomorrow morning.

secret surprises made the kids a little bit crazy... see?

along with the box was a set of foot prints in the snow indicating someone who can run in the snow... so not the grandparents. the handwriting on the tags is a bit familiar but I just can't place it.

I've done secret santa before and I loved doing it. I'm sure we won't be in a financial position to do that again for a few more years :( but I would love so much to do it again. I like being able to give - it's great fun

so who ever you are Secret Santa, thank you very very much.

for the next month...

I've been wondering something lately...
well, I've been wondering a couple of things really.
how many people are reading me?
do I know you? and if so how?

some of my readers I know and they comment so I know that I certainly have three readers, but I must wonder if there are more.
so I put a little poll box on the side bar. (look to the right of this text)

I guess I will continue to write my blog, mostly because this is the best I'm getting at keeping a journal/record of my life and my kids lives here.

so answer the poll if you please
and if you wouldn't mind, comment on this post and let me know who you are... do a little shout out.

sole survivor

last week a piece of my church's history was destroyed by fire. follow the link to learn more
investigation of the cause is on hold until they can stabilize the remaining walls, etc... but it is thought that it was most likely electrical.

I visited this building only once. I was 15 or 16 at the time

over the last several days I have thought a lot about that building but more about the only thing that made it out of a fire that raged for more than 12 hours.
a picture of Christ. the picture in particular has had a very special place in my heart. I saw this picture after my mom died almost 22 years ago and it touched me more profoundly than I can ever say.
the Tabernacle is where I first saw this picture. it makes me emotional every time I see it.
so the fact that it is this picture has great significance to me.

begining to wind down

tonight is Erica's choir concert. then we have Christmas Eve with Grandma. after that there is no more running here or there.

however, I do have a little bit of shopping to do for any perishable foods that I want to have on Christmas and depending on availability I could be going to a few different stores/markets for those things. I really hope that I can get these all with two stops.

Tim is going to be home for a nice vacation soon. he actually has more time off from work than the kids have off from school.

edit: a correction needs to be made... the concert is rescheduled. the kids got out of school early due to snow.
so Wednesday concert, Friday grandma's, Saturday home. :)

the birthday boy

Yesterday was Timothy's birthday. 13 years old.
two teens under my roof.

timothy is very camera shy and because of that I didn't make him pose for any pictures and therefore I don't have a lot of pictures of him.

his birthday was a couple of days ago and I have been busy and lazy and haven't gotten any of the pictures of him on his birthday edited until now.

a little about his day. the day before was Erica's birthday and we got iced and snowed in. it was pretty horrible and the road out front of our house was not cleared off until much later in the day on Sunday. We were supposed to have the gingerbread house party at my sister's that day and so Timothy said he wanted to wait to celebrate his birthday. but we were still snowed in. so we decided that we wouldn't let that get us down and we went ahead and had his birthday. I quickly made his cake and we had ice cream from the day before (you are saying "hey, you said you didn't have any. you lie." but I don't lie. Erica and I braved the storm and walked to our little grocery store. I thought I was going to die. but that's another story)
while we were stuck home the kids played outside. they are tough kids because it was below zero outside.
timothy dug out a 'fort' and he stayed curled up in it for a very long time.
the littler kids didn't last out there as long as he did but I was shocked that they played out there for over a half hour.

this is our van. Tim's car wasn't covered in snow. just a bit of a drift close and some ice. I even tried to take a picture of under the van since there is snow blown under and packed under the van. but I was shivering and in freezing pain so I didn't get a good picture of that.

we had Timothy's favorite soup for supper. just as we were setting the table for supper the power went out. everyone scrambled for candles and flashlights and we ate supper by flashlight and candles. the power was out for a bit over a half hour.
thankfully it came back on right as we were finishing up eating.

another memorable birthday this month. :)

He bunched his candles in the middle so he would be sure to blow them all out in one try.

Happy Birthday

so yummy I have to share the recipe

24 ounce package white almond bark

1.5 cups toasted slivered almonds

1.5 cups dried cranberries

zest of one orange

prepare the wax paper covered surface before you start mixing because this will start cooling quickly. Melt bark stirring until smooth. Stir in remaining ingredients until coated and well mixed.Quickly spread candy on 18 inch long sheet of waxed paper/ foil into a thin... layer. Let set, break into pieces. Store tightly covered.

Now I will have this recipe right here and I won't have to search high and low through my recipe books to find it.

enjoy

sweet 16 gets a very memorable birthday

this is our birthday girl. she is 16 today. most people want their 16 year old girl to remember their 16th birthday and they go to ridiculous lengths to make that day unforgettable.

how sweet :)

but what I can't make happen with money I make up for in other ways...
this is my kitchen window. that is snow, not frost covering that window.
thankfully the snow is NOT so deep that it has covered this window, but instead it is blowing around so much that it has completely covered that side of the house.
add that to me forgetting to buy ice cream for a birthday party and we are out of rice for her chosen birthday supper and there is a 1/4 inch of ice all over our road and we can not drive anywhere - not even to run to the store across our highway.
we can't even walk on the road outside our house... (that's another story I will try to tell you about later.)
so she might have to go without ice cream and rice for her birthday

this is how she feels about it.

but at least I have her cake done and her present bought already so she will have at least something if we can't get to the store soon.

Happy Birthday, sweety

the other blog

this morning I was peeking in on my other blog and checking the hit count for it and I was surprised to see a hit from another country that used a translator to look at me. Arabic is such a beautiful written language.
I got curious about what other countries have either pinged my crochet blog or have spent some time there so I went through and made a list

  • the Czech Republic
  • France
  • Brazil
  • Greece
  • Spain
  • Hungary
  • India
  • Poland
  • Uruguay
  • New Zealand
  • Belgium
  • Indonesia
  • Finland
  • Hong Kong
  • Australia
  • Serbia
  • Japan
  • the Philippines
  • Italy
  • Canada
  • the United Kingdom
  • the Russian Federation
  • Romania
  • the Netherlands
  • Germany
  • Sweden
  • Egypt

it is so much fun for me to know that pictures I've taken of things I've made and words I have written have traveled all over the world. I might never get to see these places, but people from those places have had a small glimps into my part of the world

how cool is that!

addition:

you can add Latvia to that list

and so begins the busiest month of our year

I'm sure that I have mentioned it in the past, I am not a soccer mom. I am not used to running here and there for anything on a regular basis, so when December rolls around I am wiped out by the beginning of the third week and I just can't wait for the month's end to come.
every time we go someplace, it turns into Sunday morning around here. unless Tim and I can sneak out and go by ourselves... but December is all about family and if any of the kids can be left home we need to worry about getting a baby sitter.... which reminds me....
anyway

this weekend I am going to be taking most of the kids to see Harry Potter - so beginning the process....
then there is camper cabin (I've wrote about this last year and the year before... nutshell just me and my sisters - there are ladies there who are not biologically my sister, but they are my sisters) Okay, I can deal with this, but from there it is bordering frantic
the day I get back from camper cabin... it is Erica's birthday
the next day is Timothy's birthday
same day is the Gingerbread Party hosted by my sister
the next day is the high school winter band concert
small break
then there is the elementary school winter music program
somewhere in this is the winter choir concert (the date remains unknown)
also somewhere in here we will decorate Christmas cookies with grandma (still needs to be scheduled)
then there is going to be family Christmases - two of which have yet to be scheduled as well
then there is vacation from school. I will, very strongly, be fighting the urge to cause physical harm to all the fighting children. I will succeed in this, as I always do, but there will be yelling

.... in a week and a half I will have 2 teen-agers.
the oldest of them is going to be 16.
16!
what?!

years pass by so fast now. she's going to be gone soon with a family of her own before I know it.

wow

the one that will drive you all away

I have in essence been disowned by my biological contributor because I told him I think he and his wife are wrong.
they asked. I said. they got mad and good riddance. but they wanted to know and if they weren't prepared to hear what I had to say then they should have kept their mouths shut. because, really, what did they expect? I'm sure they knew what was going to happen when they started it.
because seriously, I'm 36 I have a mind of my own and I have a family of my own. I'm not about to be all 'boo hoo, you're right and I'm a stupid girl child'
I think that they got exactly what they set out for, me being rid of them.

It's okay though... they think it's about money because that's all they think about, but really it's about 36 years of him being a crap dad to me. and I'm just sick of him being so oblivious and thinking he's just never wrong, and never ever caring about me.
So I'm glad that I will never have to have anything to do with his shriveled old harpy wife or him again.

Yay! I'm FREE

oh my

We're making peanut butter cookies with the chocolate stars on top...

Ronan is saying "no way... no way... no way..."
so I say "Jose"
Ronan: "hose way"

Emma: "that's weird, or is that the French way to say it?"

:D

Thanksgiving

with Thanksgiving tomorrow, I thought I had better put a bit of thought into what I am thankful for.

I am thankful:
the worst illness that my children have is a cold.
I do not have any major heart problem (just a tiny one)
my family was spared from being hit by a tornado this summer
my husband still has a job when so many people have lost theirs in the last few years
we have a roof over our heads
we have food to eat
and warmth in the winter
my kids have terrific grandparents who want to be a part of their lives and they act on it
I'm thankful that my tiny store has had customers here and there
Tim loves me

so far a short list... I'll most likely add to it

EPIC FAIL!!!

My sister has a son who has autism. he has some verbal skills, but usually not more than one or two words together.
He has been suffering from headaches for a very long time now and my sister has discussed with his doctor that he may be having migraines. how can you express that when you are a low verbal autistic person? the best he can do is say "head" or "headache". he can't explain just how badly it hurts or how the pain is so sever that it makes him nauseated.
there is another possibility. when his meds have taken a dip because he metabolizes them too quickly or that they just don't work as they should, he tends to have outbursts, often resulting in physical harm to himself by way of hitting his head on things. my sister is concerned that he may, over all these years, have caused some kind of brain damage or other issue with his head.

yesterday they decided that they needed to get some treatment for him. To get some help to manage the pain he is in and to find out what is wrong. he has a right to be comfortable and healthy just like any other person in the world. but when they took him to the hospital, the hospital flatly refused treatment based solely on the fact that he has autism.
if you are wondering, the hospital in question is Immanuel Saint Joseph's Hospital in Mankato MN.
boycott them if you are in the area, because this is not the first failure on their part to adequately treat a patient, but I have to say that this is certainly the most appalling.
it isn't about money, because if that were the case, they would have taken him in and ran test after test until they found the problem or until they found that another hospital would have been better able to serve them and referred them to a specialist.
No... they just didn't want to deal with a high maintenance patient. they refused them because they were simply too lazy to try to help. they would send him home with the same problems for a weary woman half his size to deal with him in a place that is really not set up to restrain a patient who may have a violent outburst. a woman who is NOT medically trained and who is NOT equipped to medicate with anything more than useless Tylenol.

therefore this post is aptly titled epic fail, because it was a failure of EPIC proportions.

Thankfully my sister and brother in law were able to find one doctor who was on their side. it took a very long time but they got someone to listen to them and they are being sent to a much more capable facility. Thank God.
funny thing is, ISJ claimed to have called 11 other hospitals and all 11 hospitals were not able to take him. How is it, then, that one doctor was able to make one referral and get them a place in a better hospital? I would have to surmise that ISJ did not, in fact, call anyone at all.

instead, they simply say 'the behavior that this person is exhibiting is nothing more than his Autism and therefore nothing is wrong with him because his vitals are just fine' is just so completely unethical as a doctor not to mention STUPID. Aren't you supposed to be educated when you are a doctor? even if you don't specialize in autism you should at least be able to know that to say such a thing is totally asinine.

If you can't tell, I'm completely incensed by this. I think I might be more outraged by the fact that there is nothing I can do about it.

we should call the news. not local they're rubbish. but there are enough people around that watch out of the cities... we should call Eye Witness 5 and Kare 11 etc. this really should be spread around until ISJ is forced to offer real care for ALL people.

Eagle powers anyone?

Friday Tim got home earlier from work than expected. they had been working OT all last week and this week and they just ran out of stuff to do for that afternoon and so the option was given to all employees and they all went home a lot earlier...
I digress from my point.

He came in and told me to grab the camera. so I did and got ready to run out the door.

(click pictures for slightly larger pictures)
it didn't take long before he got tired of us looking at him.

it's nice to see them around.
I remember when I was a kid we would never ever see them. it just didn't happen. I think until I was 29 I only ever saw three and that was from the greatest distance. I could only tell that it was a Bald Eagle because I could see the tiny speck that was it's head.
now we see them several times a year. they live close and last year they even landed in our tree.
truly Awesome

don't know what to say

but I thought I'd better give you something new to look at until I get things updated here.

Monday, November 8, 2010

wow, abby, you're so talented

but just not enough.

sorry I have to get that out somewhere since it's just screaming through my entire being.

oh and all necklaces 20% off....

ppppplllttttttttt.....

such wit :)

this morning I got a weather report by email from kare11.com
there was a critical typo in that forecast but they did correct it but until they did it gave us a few minutes of entertainment.

here is a screen shot of that forecastnote the highlighted temperature of 602 for the high

Timothy and I were having a bit of a chuckle about this then Connor said
"after school, can we play in the sprinkler?"

:)
that's great

Sean the Ranger

I know a young man (younger than me so I can call him that) who I can consider my friend. I've known him since he was a baby. and though we have never been exceptionally close I think of him and worry about him while he is on his adventure.
you see he has decided to take a journey and the rules he has about this adventure is this. he is homeless. during this time in his life he is writing a blog about his experiences as a homeless person. he is doing what he can to make people aware that not all homeless people are drugged out, thieves, or insane. many people who are without a place to live simply have hit on hard times. they have lost jobs and have been unable to find work to pay for a home.
very few people actually choose to be homeless.

most of my readers already know about his blog, but I'm sharing the link anyway....

it has been interesting to follow along with the bits of his life that he has chosen to share.

and because Sean is practically family (being son of my friends and nephew to other friends, and cousin to many more of my friends, and just being really cool and kind himself) pray for him so that he will be kept safe.

trick or treat

this year we had three kids to trick or treat. they were all so eager, but none as much as Connor. he was truly vibrating from the excitement.HULK WANT CANDY

I have a rule that once you turn 12 you are now too old to beg for candy on Halloween. teens are so greedy and then they take the fun out of it for the tiny kids. my older children knew they are not going to be trick or treating.

Emma is wearing a dress I bought for Erica when she was really little. I found her a new witch hat this year and then we were going to do fake eyelashes that matched, but they didn't work at all!

for Connor and Ronan I bought them costumes with money I earned from my store.
because my big kids didn't go trick or treating, I didn't really concern myself with getting them ready but I focused on costumes for the little ones.

Connor is the Hulk and Ronan is Optimus Prime. they play iron man and spider man so much (especially Ronan) that I forbade them to choose either of those costumes.

Timothy and Erica opted to be scary lawn decorations for Grandma.
I took the pictures right before we took the little ones out (while they weren't too tired to stand still for a moment to snap a picture)

the pictures of the bigger kids get to wait for last because they were gross. timothy looked like this just until we left. he went in and washed his hands and neck and put on a couple more sweatshirts, took his shirt with the 'blood' and wore it on the outside of everything and went a new direction with the blood. more on that in a moment.

Erica laid on the ground and giggled and giggled while I tried to take a picture. I snapped fast in her very brief moments of composure. I said I was taking crime scene pictures and she started laughing. and then she had a hard time stopping.

after Tim changed his look he got uncle John's old skateboard as a prop. He laid down on the ground next to the side walk then put the skate board upside down over his leg.

Erica took some more fake blood and oozed it down her shirt more. by the time we got back she was in a lawn chair but she looked really gross. I did tell them that they had better not go over board with the blood because there were going to be really little kids stopping by.
I didn't get any pictures of the skate board accident and the dead girl in the lawn chair because when we got back they jumped up and I was shot and didn't want to pose them again. maybe grandma got a picture? but that's okay if she didn't

Holidays are fast upon us

at this moment, I have only 3 more presents I have left to buy for Christmas. I have 1 more birthday present to worry about.
I have to say that I love the internet. there are it's down sides, but Christmas is made so much easier. but at the same time it does make my shopping far more complicated.

Yesterday I asked Ronan (3 years old) what he would like for Christmas. He said that he wanted Doctor Who ~ yes my children are scifi geeks. I asked him what kind of Doctor Who toy and he said he wanted a TARDIS. That's my boy!
I looked. I found. I bought.
after I bought it I realized that we are going to have a mini-Dr.Who theme this year since I have been working on a TARDIS blanket (if you don't know Doctor Who is one of the best science fiction TV shows that was ever made. a TARDIS is his space ship/time machine shaped like an old british police box) awesome.

you might be wondering why, since I was able to find such a strange present, does the internet make things more complicated. well it's like this
several years ago I had decided that I didn't like the meager options for toys in our area. I looked on the internet and that was the end of my shopping for Christmas in Walmart.
my kids still have relatively normal requests on their Christmas and Birthday lists. but I have a hard time just getting a regular Barbie or Hot Wheels, I believe I can do better/cooler. don't get me wrong, dolls and cars are great toys. we have many of them and when I say many I mean many.

I guess part of my reasoning for wanting something so different for my kids is that I want them to expand their minds, stretch their creativity and know that there is more to life and the world than what our part of the world can offer.

back to the planning and presents left.....
I am certainly feeling infinitely calmer this year than last year. I had been pretty much cursing the entire month of December last year.
at this rate I will have all gift shopping done in a couple of weeks, then I can wrap things all December. *sigh*

kinda gross... but he is 12

Timothy has a camera that he got a couple of years ago.
he usually doesn't take pictures but this summer he was very bored and got an idea to alleviate the boredom. he had modeling clay and a camera and thus was created this poor little clay person... then he died

I think with a little encouragement (and a new topic) he just might have a career.

when you just can't play one more second

the other night we were all in the living room - some watching TV, others working on other projects - when someone realized that Ronan hadn't been heard from for a while.
you know how it goes... quiet child usually means trouble.

the only trouble coming from this is a sore neck

Iron Toddler

If you know my kids you'll know that they tend to obsess a bit. My boys find a super hero that is way awesome and like any boy will pretend to be that hero.
such is the case with Ronan and Iron Man. last year I made him mittens with white circles on the palms because he loved to pretend to shoot things with his little Iron Man flight stabilizers - like Iron Man does.
you should see him go with those things. he put's Tony Stark to shame

while I was working on a pattern/tutorial today and taking pictures of the steps needed he took my lens cap because it is the perfect size for a mini arc reactor.

he says this is his iron man heart

a bit about the baptism

the baptism was a wonderful experience for us all. I'm sure there is very little that Emma will remember about this day, there was a lot going on. but one thing she is sure to remember is that the water was cold. the hot water heater wasn't able to keep up with the demand, I guess.

there were a lot of friends and family there.
and of course we were asked to pose for a family picture. my family is pretty good looking.

but there is a reason that I am always behind the camera

about the birthday party

Emma is the girliest girl there ever was. okay, maybe not, but she is does love sparkly, swirly, lofty kinds of things. This is why her cake has princess sprinkles. she decided that it would be best if the sprinkles were not all mixed together so she put them the cake herself.
if you're wondering what they are, they are white pearls, yellow crowns/tiaras, blue glass slippers, and red apples (from snow white - no one was poisoned eating these apples)

Connor and Emma are always giggling together. It often makes me crazy... they kind of get themselves worked into a squealing, giggling frenzy. I have to remind myself - often - that it could be worse, they could be fighting non stop. at least they like each other.
her presents were a barbie with a kitchen set. she says that she can pretend that the kitchen is in Barbie's house or it is her cafeteria that she apparently owns and operates :)

she also received some wonderful art supplies which included a sketch pad, color pencils, a very nice artist's eraser, and a book with instructions on how to draw different kinds of pets.
she has been drawing a lot and she is pretty good. (I still need to take pictures of her drawings)
she had a great time

it was a great birthday

for Emma.
I, on the other hand, suffer from sensory overload with every birthday that happens in this house.
but this one is extra special. Emma is 8, so along with her birthday I get to organize - to some degree - a baptism. so I've been kind of swamped for the last week and I will go over birthday pictures when I finally have a minute after the baptism is done.

I'll try to blog tomorrow, complete with pictures

it wasn't all bad (a lot of pictures)

the day we went out to the falls we hadn't even left home yet and Connor came running back in the house and was so excited. he told me that I had to come and see what Emma had. with the cooler temperatures everything is a bit sluggish.

she caught a leopard frog. those things are tricky to get a hold of. the longer she held it the more it warmed up and struggled to get away. it would kick and push the hand she had supporting his legs

she giggled a lot.

then we went out to see the falls. the kids had so much fun and I wasn't a complete tyrant the entire time. As soon as they got out of the car they were climbing and running.
there were a couple of places that I could allow them to freely run and have fun.

Ronan and Emma started it.
see them running in the background of this picture of Connor being Farmer Brown
they were running through the picnic area and Emma ran too close to the tree...(maybe she meant to do it) but she put her foot up on the tree and bounced off and kept running. everyone saw her do it and it was so cool! every one of the kids had to have their turn, then it turned into 'how high up the tree can I run'I really should have stopped them because it is a State Park. but I think that I was just so relieved to not have to keep them away from the fences and railings that I just didn't care if they were abusing the tree a little.....
just so long as they weren't risking falling into this churning wateror off a cliff

so I let them get it out of their systems

Connor may have gotten a little worn out from all the running around.
I was secretly hoping for this. let them wear themselves out and they might not give me trouble when it's time for bedsome might call this cheating, but Ronan is the winner... although Timothy did run the highest without any help
in the bike rack. yeah.... you're guess is as good as mine.
:)

almost 2 years have gone by

why do I always do this? so many things have happened in the past two years.  I just feel so silly that I haven't kept up on the blog.  ...
