336! top that

She did it!

Last year Erica's record for pi was 156 numbers memorized. now that's nothing to sneeze at, but today Erica recited pi to a whopping 336 number places!

now that's a great reason to celebrate!

I wish I had seen it

yesterday at church Tim and I had gone outside between classes. it was nice and quiet but you could hear a little background chatter. we took a few steps and then I suddenly realized what that chatter was. Robins!

I love robin's song. it's so cheerful and uplifting. it's kind of like it's heralding the green grass and dry ground. it means that colorful things are about to happen.
I'm feeling kind of desperate for beautiful colors and a dry yard so I can kick the kids out of the house and so I can make plans this spring and summer for days at the arboretum. Last year we didn't go and it was kind of a depressing year.

it's time to stretch and cast off this winter gloom.

forget Mr. Groundhog as a predictor of spring. He's got nothing on Robin.

Thank you, little Robin, for cheering me and giving me hope that this winter is on it's way out.

mmmm, pi

today was pi day - 3/14 (3.14) I did not make a pie.

this week Erica will be reciting pi again at school and she is attempting to break her record from last year. I'm surprised that I didn't write about it last year. well to rectify that oversight (March was very busy and worrisome last year), I'll mention it now.

in honor of pi day last year the school had a bit of a contest to see who could memorize the most numbers in pi past the decimal point. the last school record had been held for about 4 years and Erica just creamed that record. she memorized it 50 more places than the previous record with about 153 number places past the decimal.

Since then she has continued to memorize more numbers in pi. she is really close to 250 places. I think that not only will she break her old record, but she will more than likely hold that record for years and years to come. maybe even decades and decades.

Good luck Erica!

I will, hopefully, be better about reporting the exciting results.

a sure sign of Spring

the last couple of years many birds have failed to migrate south for the winter and so it has been a little bit hard to judge the change of seasons by when the birds start showing up again. however there is still one sure sign of spring....
the other day I saw an ant in my kitchen, no doubt a scout.
I will take that as a sign that it is getting warm enough to expect a good spring. maybe this year when I plant flowers in my yard they will actually grow instead of freeze the way they did last year.

almost 2 years have gone by

why do I always do this? so many things have happened in the past two years.  I just feel so silly that I haven't kept up on the blog.  ...
